Jacqueline -N- Raymond's lovely fall wedding at the Hummingbird House, Austin, Tx

From Jacqueline - Wedding planning was a matter of project management for me until I realized the gravity of the even about 3 weeks from the date.  It’s not that I wasn’t excited at the thought of throwing a wedding, I’m just great at compartmentalizing which was kind of necessary for me to do to get through planning and all the DIY projects myself.  Something I didn’t expect was that my emotions got the best of me at the end of the project planning phase and that led to many complex emotions in the 2 weeks before the wedding.  The nail biting excitement that I was going to marry my best friend, have everyone both he & I loved in one room, and enjoy a kick-a$$ party all at the same time got to me!  Each time I went down the guest list for invitation follow-ups, I reminisced about moments & events either I shared with each guest, heard about (as retold by Raymond), or Raymond and I shared with that guest together.   The culmination of each of those loving memories and how they impacted each of us as people, in and outside our relationship, was positively overwhelming.  All of those loving memories compounded on the fact that a marriage, had been 14 years coming, was about to occur; and each guest was partially responsible for getting us there!

On the Wedding Day - I don’t know why I had the illusion that everything would loosely go as planned timeline-wise, but it didn’t.  The hours before the wedding, I wished so hard to be the bubbly bride that everyone, including myself, wanted me to be, but instead I was driven to hyperventilate several times.  Between family members who made the event about themselves rather than Ray & I and timetables being blown out of the water, expectation after expectation was completely crushed.  I was convinced I was going to throw up on myself as my dad and I walked out into the damp lawn, not because things didn’t go according to my schedule, but more because my plans had allowed plenty of time for my family who was helping to be comfortable and prepared, but instead I lead them into chaos! Then I saw the grounds & heard the processional music I’d picked 12 months prior for the first time.  It was still overcast after the rain, but the flowers were gorgeous, so many friends and family were in the crowd, none of my kind helpers looked as if they’d broken a sweat just 30 minutes prior and my best friend was waiting for me at the front of the aisle.  In that moment all of the anxiety melted away and I was so content and at peace.  Our officiant led a wonderful service and kept everyone’s attention even though there was the distant sounds of 90’s rock playing at a neighboring property.  Raymond & I were looking at each other trying to stop one another from not cracking up that “Bad to the Bone” was playing during our ceremony.  Everything from then on out went well, Raymond and I pulled off our first dance and got tons of kudos on it, which was a huge relief because Raymond cannot dance to save his life.  Raymond and I couldn’t believe who wonderful the toasts were, my sisters and Raymond’s best friend and brother did great – and pulled together the best speech’s we could ask for.

After that the rest of the evening was one huge blur, honestly! But here are the top 10 memories that Raymond and I have of the night:

  1. DJ Jeff from Spacecraft Entertainment was amazing and definitely knew how to work the crowd.
  2. Our friend Jim Chambers literally made me dance every salsa song that came on with him – he’s a very intense dancer!
  3. Several family members came up to Raymond and I saying “I had no idea you were dancers”, which was hysterical because we really aren’t.
  4. Raymond’s grandpa even said, “We saw the wild side of Jackie tonight.”
  5. At one point I believe I acted the words of NSync “tearing up my heart” out, which came up on the playlist as a total surprise!
  6. We stole each other away for about 10 minutes to walk around the grounds and take everything in.
  7. Raymond surprised me with a vocal performance of “at last” by his cousin Robby
  8. There was an attempt at a Boys vs. Girls dance off
  9. My mom’s whole squad had a blast at the DIY photo booth we set out!
  10. The night ended somehow with Raymond and I being surrounded by people on the dance floor cheering us on while dancing “Last Dance” – it was both terrifying and awesome J

Then we ran off into the night and were married!

Thao -N- John / An Austin Wedding at the Hummingbird House by Melanie Grizzel

2015-07-06_0001.jpg

from Thao and John:

I suppose it was about the time I realized my wedding would be less of a Grace Kelly affair, and something a bit closer to My Big Fat Greek Wedding, when I started to really enjoy my day.  All the little, silly details start to blur into a vaseline lens view, and you realize all the things important.  That's when I was not only excited to marry my lifetime lover, but when I fell in love with my friends and family all over again.  My fondest memories of my wedding are seeing my friends and family gather in full force to help fold napkins while singing railroad songs, drive newly make-up'd bridal parties in un-air-conditioned minivans, aunts (well, one in particular) charging into the changing room just because she deserved to be there, uncles with cameras wielded more boisterously than the most seasoned paparazzi, cousins who were supposed to be guests instead transform into freelance wedding coordinators.  That's when you realize how much love surrounds you, that people you love so much are so willing to sacrifice time and distance away from their busy lives, Mother's day and birthdays put on hold, just to be with you and help you, to celebrate you and the love of your life.  And then, of course, there's my husband.  Who stood at the end of the aisle, crying like a newborn babe.  That was my absolute favorite part of the wedding--seeing that one person you want to be with most on this Earth, wanting the very same thing.  It brings me to tears again just thinking of our wonderful vows.  There were butterflies.  Not like in Disney movies, but real live butterflies floating in the air as we uttered lifelong promises to each other in front of those friends and family we hold dearly.  The wedding day was a blur, but the bits and pieces that I keep are some of the most valuable I have, and I will treasure them for as long as we both shall live.

Thao says:

Oh how do I count the ways?! Mel can do no wrong in my eyes.  While still awaiting my wedding pictures, I have NO RESERVATIONS about recommending her over and over and over again (and in fact, already spread her gospel amongst my newly engaged friends).  Why?  Because she is talent incarnate.  And a lot of fun.  But her talent and fun are only icing on a massive, moist cake of professionalism.  Her work is absolutely incredible--our engagement pictures were fun, unique, and vibrant with life and love.  She was flexible, yet inspired throughout, and took our ideas and made it her own.  I LOVED our engagement pictures and the three wedding shots I've seen--especially because I was a bit camera-shy with some self-doubt.  She made it all go away with a few camera flashes, and has the uncanny ability of seeing (and capturing) the beauty in anyone, regardless of how long she's known you.  She's willing to try new ideas and methods, yet experienced enough to know what looks best.  She is reliable, timely and responsive.  She guides without being overbearing--hell, she even talked me down during my one bridezilla moment when the family was pulling me here and there during family photo time in a cathedral veil under the Texan sun (think Hatfields and McCoys, except both factions come from my side of the family).  She is truly a gem--while everyone else makes you feel like you're just another bride-cog in the wedding-machine, Mel actually made me feel beautiful on the most important day to feel beautiful.  And for that memory and keepsake?  I'm forever grateful...

Jessica -N- Nathan / Hummingbird House Wedding / Austin Wedding Photography by Melanie Grizzel

Jessica and Nathan - Happy Anniversary!

First off, I wish I had had the time to post this blog last year because I was so excited about it.  This wedding was so much fun for everyone involved. They had so many awesome ideas... but alas we were too bogged down to do the fun part last year.

Jessica and Nathan met when Jessica's sister got into juggling and performance and took Jessica with her to a convention in Vegas. There, out of pure kismet, she met Nathan. They stayed in contact over long distance, and one time when she came to visit him she followed Nathan climbing to the top of a communications tower. From atop that tower, their fate was sealed.

Their wedding was equally bold and lovely.  Everything was meticulously made by hand. At the center of each table was a hand-crafted electronic box and a card of questions at each table setting. The questions were about Jessica and Nathan but were tailored to each table, specifically how each person at the table knew the couple (clever.) Once the questions were answered and all the answers were keyed in, the lock boxes sprang open and inside was a poker chip for everyone at the table to be redeemed at the bar for a lei (for later.) In addition, the box also included Mentos to be tossed into the centerpieces which were filled with oil and food coloring which transformed the vases into unique lava lamps. After dinner, Jessica's dad gave his speech and had the couple come to the stage where he blind-folded them. Then he quietly got all of the guests to don fake mustaches and he climbed into a lobster costume while the rest of the groomsmen got into the costumes they wore for J and N's engagement video, a lion, a banana and a grim reaper (maybe.) Wild! To cap off this already amazing celebration, the couple arranged for a 30 minute variety show complete with unicycles, juggling, dog tricks and so much more! For their first dance, the newly minted couple preformed a professionally-choreographed routine and followed that with a "lei dance" whereby each individual guest could hang their lei on either one of the couple and get a few moments on the dance floor with them.

It was so much fun, I'm sure they will be thinking of that night forever, and particularly in one month.  Happy Anniversary, you two!
